Refresco hosts the solo exhibition “Primeiro Encontro : Último Encontro” by Simon Fernandes from February 9 to 26, 2022. The artist from Fortaleza presents 8 works that recreate, in the analog space of the gallery, an experience designed for the digital realm. With a computer and a large screen, visitors can explore virtual rooms entirely programmed by the artist. The collection of works is hosted on a website open for navigation. The exhibition also includes sculptures made from discarded electronic materials.

In Simon’s words, the exhibition stems from a desire to explore sculptural and spatial aspects in the web environment. “I am interested in the universe of computational language, open-source tools, and the possibility of modeling spaces/volumes/sculptures made with code — text and light,” says Simon Fernandes. The holographic universe in which the works inhabit reflects the shift of several instances of daily life into the virtual domain, making digital interfaces a place for structuring contemporary subjectivity.

Simon Fernandes’ work also carries a strong political component, pointing out the emerging data infrastructures as new tools and technologies of power. By dismantling the functionality of these mechanisms, Simon creates a vector for hacking these power structures that dominate the 21st century.
